  • Abort, Retry, Fail?

If, like me, you love history and really have an unhealthy love of wallowing in computing nostalgia, then you’ll love Abort Retry Fail.

I stumbled across Bradford Morgan White’s website documenting the history of the computing industry a while back and immediately started losing time like a supporting character on the X-Files.

Some highlights to look out for include The History of Windows 2000, in my opinion the best version of Windows – all been downhill from there! and The Story of Napster which was surely one of the most interesting and exciting periods in the industry’s history.

Grab yourself your favourite drink, crack open the MacBook or fire up the iPhone (wait – you’re not using an Apple product?) and knock yourself out.

    You can thank me later.

  • Not till we are lost – part 2

So I finished the latest Bobiverse audiobook, Not Till We Are Lost on the drive in to work this morning.

9/10 – Strong recommend, would listen again.

So when’s the next one out Dennis?

  • In the Be-ginning…

    … there was BeOS

In class today we had a great discussion on historical UNIX-like Operating Systems, particularly Jean-Louis Gassee’s BeOS.

Which of course, we followed up with a discussion on Haiku, the BeOS-like Open Source OS.

I’m really rooting for Haiku – I love this project!

You can learn more about Haiku here: https://www.haiku-os.org

  • Not till we are lost

Trip into London today to meet some new apprentices gives me a chance to make progress on the latest Bobiverse book, Not till we are lost.

    Happy Higgins.

  • Hello again world!

I’ve been meaning to take this up again, and some prompting by some of my students (you know who you are) has been the straw that broke this particular camel’s back.

I’ve blogged sporadically over the years, and always enjoyed reading other people’s pages and missed chucking my tuppence in. I’m not sure if anyone will read any of this let alone find it interesting but if nothing else it’ll be an archive for my kids to read one day.

Apparently I’m quite good at finding and talking about interesting things, sometimes from the internet and sharing them in the classroom, so much so that some of my students have asked me to continue this type of malarkey on the web.

Well, you (some of you anyway) asked for it…
